• Did my CBT yesterday and everyone there is fantastic. Put me at ease and really boosted my confidence. Went out for my 2hour road ride with Dan and he was brilliant and very funny and despite the problems I was having with my bike, he remained patient and kept me calm (even though I did loose him at one point!).He was constantly talking us through our journey and telling us what to look out for and keeping us safe from the crazy Sunday drivers that were out to kill us! I am now thinking about doing the mod 1 and 2 to get my full licence and will def go back to these guys, they made what I expected to be a really stressful day relaxed and fun which is what riding a motorcycle should be. Thanks so much guys for all your tips and help getting me on the road. If you are looking for motorcycle training then look no further…..brilliant.

Did my Mod 1 & Mod 2 with these guys and WOW what a team!.
I got through first time due to their patience, guidance and abilities to just steer in the right direction and push with just enough force until it becomes second nature.
Many thanks especially to Ian & Stephan but mostly to Dan.
You gave me the the confidence to ride well & safely and enjoy it at the same time.
Guess I owe you a bottle of Vodka !!!

The proof is in the test results and with Mod 1 and Mod 2 passed today with no minors, it is safe to say that Shires (and Dan in particular) did a great job!
Did my training including a CBT refresher and both modules over the space of a few weeks and it was all really well delivered. From Tom helping to make the CBT more challenging through to Dan tailoring three days of off and on road training, they really managed to deliver a package that was right for me.
Big thank you for the training and I’ll see you back for an Enhanced Course once the new bike is in the garage :)

Completed cbt yesterday with Dan. The course was packed with crucial information and delivered so well that for someone like myself (who has never been on the road before on a bike, or been on a bike…. ever!) boosted confidence enough to just get up and go! it has even got me considering buying another copy of the highway code just to get up to scratch (and i’ve been a car driver for 15+years!) The Team are faultless professionals in what they do with regard to service & safety, at all levels. I’ll be back sometime soon for the mod1 & 2! Anyone thinking of doing bike training, just phone in and book, its pretty awesome! Again, thanks for yesterday chief, bang on!

I followed in my brother’s footsteps in choosing Shires to complete my CBT and Direct Access course. I started in November and finished my Mod 2 at the end of January. I found the great teaching and high quality of on-road learning (with Danny in my ear via headset) led to a relaxed and confident approach to riding in my everyday life. I’m now sitting pretty on a Kawasaki ER6F, I’m looking forward to taking my refresher tests with Shires in two years time.

I would highly recommend this company, the staff are friendly and efficient; they even wave when we cross paths!

Thanks to everyone for your patience and encouragement to get me through my MOD1 and MOD tests. After retaking CBT’s every 2 years for quite a while Dan encouraged my to go for the test which was definitely worthwhile, although not always easy – can’t wait to go and buy a ‘proper’ bike now! Your bikes will be a little safer from not being dropped so often :o) Thanks again everyone especially Dan, Steph and Ian!!

I was looking for somewhere to do my motorcycle training with when I came across Shires. I went over to Leicester for my free ride and enjoyed it so much I decided to do my training with them. They are a really friendly and professional group of people who are enthusiastic and helpful. I did my CBT with them and was booked in for my Mod 1 & 2 but unfortunately had to cancel at the last minute as I was waiting for spinal surgery and my date was brought forward by some months. I had to ring up and explain the situation and cancel everything but they are holding my place open for when I’m fit enough to ride again. They have been brilliant, I am now 3 weeks post-op and looking forward to the day i can get back on my bike and pass my test. They have been brilliant and I would recommend them to anyone.

BIG Thanks to the team at Shires Motorcycle Training. I had a great time doing my DAC and I passed all tests on the first attempt. From day one I was made to feel very welcome and was very surprised to hear Teresa, Dan, Gareth, Alan and Ian all say I was the best rider they had ever seen (cough)…Truthfully though I enjoyed every moment of the course especially Dan’s witty jokes, Gareth’s ever so slight Geordie accent, Alan’s blatant over-use of the term “Moist” and Ian’s shining professionalism as he ironed out my minor faults just prior to my Mod 2.

I’ve just completed a one day Enhanced Rider training session with Ian after returning to biking after 35 years. The session has given me confidence to take to the roads again on a bike in a totally different environment to that which I left. The session was effectively a great day out around West Leicestershire whilst learning the whole time. I’ve still got a number of things to improve but the useful feedback given in a constructive manner during the day has pinpointed what they are and what I need to do to put them right. The Enhanced Rider training is highly recommended and excellent value of money.

Just did a Back to Biking / Enhanced Rider training day with Instructor Steph.

I hadn’t ridden since being knocked off my bike some 15 years ago, so I was a little apprehensive about climbing back on.

I had a fantastic time on one of their new Yamaha XJ6′s and after half an hour on their purpose built training area getting use to the gears etc. I was back out on the roads.

For anyone that is thinking about going ‘back to bikes’ and needs a refresher lesson to get their confidence back and also learn some really useful tips to improve your technique and stay safe out on the road, I couldn’t recommend this course highly enough!!!

The Instructor (Steph) was really friendly and knowledgeable.

As a bonus it was a lovely sunny day which made the afternoon ride through the twisty country roads to Melton Mowbray even better!

Thanks for a great day. Still smiling two days later! I now have the confidence to go and buy myself a bike!!!

I have gone through all of my training with Shires and they have been fantastic. My leg and ankle mobility is poor and Ian had to work out how to adapt a riding technique that worked for me, without this I would not have passed my Mod 2. I cannot thank the team too much for their kindness and expertise. I will be back for my enhanced rider training.

Completed my ERS training on the 21st October, I had an informative day with the instructor Ian who provided good feedback on my riding techniques. Tips on new skills to improve my riding made the day worthwhile, I’m now applying the things I learnt and discussed with my instructor. I would recommend this course to anyone regardless of your ability, anything that helps to keep you safer and improve your skills is a must! It’s a really friendly atmosphere at Shires and I’ll be going back in about a year to re-evaluate my skills and progress, thanks to everyone at Shires and especially to Ian.

A big thanks to all. I did my GET ON ride with Dan, returned the following Sun to do CBT with Marc and Ian. Mark was my instructor on road & was a true star. I have never been so close to giving up on something that Id set out to do, as I was 40min into my road ride. Marc did not push me atall said I could stop if I wanted but to just to take my time and a breather. I felt very vunerable once I got out on the rode and have a very personnal reason for feeling so, but once back on and off again I felt fine and was glad to see Marc in my mirrors, until the time I went up front and was happy to do so. Then on to the 500 and agian happy to be returning to do my Mod1 on the 6th Oct, shame Marc not able to take me through that but I’m sure Dan will be up for giving me more stick – All in good fun. Totally relaxed, safe and inspiring team. Fully recommended.

I am in the RAF so am not in Leicester for very long when on leave however Shires did a great job of squeezing me in at short notice. Having never ridden a geared bike before I was very nervous but the tuition provided really was excellent. I managed to pass my Mod 1 and Mod 2 along with complete my CBT all within a 4 day period, a feat I definately would not be able to do without such fantastic help! The reference material the school gives out is great for revision and set me in good stead for the exams. I really cannot stress enough just how great the training is at Shires, I would happy recommend them to anyone and would especially encourage people who are a little nervous to try these as the instructors do a great job of setting a relaxed atmosphere which really helps learning. I would like to say a big thank you to Dan and Ian who were top instructors and guided me to my Full Motorcycle Licence. One of the most enjoyable and relaxed training environments I have trained in. The instructors were serious when required but mostly jokes and laughter which made the learning easy. Also I would like to say the whole team at Shires were very friendly and accommodating. I would recommend to anyone who is interesting in doing any Motorcycle training, do it with Shires.

So today I spent the day on the Enhanced Rider course (£50)
Well, what a fantastic day. This is the second time I have done this course. The first time was after a 20+ year layoff from biking and was lead by Stef. Got an overall B grade and learnt a ton of stuff that I put straight into practice.
Fast forward a year or so and today I went out with Ian on a fantastic day for riding. We covered about 80 miles in all conditions, including venturing into areas of Leicester where the drivers seemed out to ‘get us’ – great fun and certainly kept us on our toes!
We covered everything from town riding to 70mph nationals. Ian is a brilliant trainer. Felt totally at ease with him. What a great guy and a highly experienced rider. I certainly picked up new info that I will be putting into practice.
This course is a bargain at £50 and I believe the true cost is around £150, the rest being subsidised by Leicester County Council I believe??
If you are coming back to biking after a layoff or think ‘you are a good rider’ then I would say Try it/DO IT. You WILL learn valuable stuff no matter how experienced you are.
Oh and my progress? Well I got an overall A grade but still have things to learn.
Thanks Ian, Stef and Tom for an awesome day….. Better than working LOL
    Stay safe

I started off riding as a 17 year old on a cold January day for my CBT having not one bit of motorcycle experience. 6 months later I completed my test, and last year followed up on this by passing my enhanced. By far this group are not a team of people that are only after statistics. Shires have shown me how to ride a motorcycle safely in all conditions and scenarios that I never knew could be done, and at 21 years of age I still revert back to the skills shown to me daily. These no doubt saved my life a couple of weeks ago when a car hit me off my bike, leaving me walking but a bike written off. I recommend Shires to all of my friends, who have gone and had training themselves. If anyone is serious about riding, SMT are the guys to call without a doubt. So good, that I have gone and purchased a sportsbike again, undetered to ride, as well as now looking at participating for the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

I completed a CBT with Shires on Saturday. I have done 2 before with Shire and they were great days in which I learnt a lot to keep me safe and ride to the best of my ability. When I rode up to the Speedway site at 8.45am, I was slightly worried as there was little flat surface and mostly gravel surfacing. My mind was put at rest when I noticed a concrete area at the back of the car park. I could have been a bit bigger but was perfect for CBT’s. It was too small however for full bike tests and for more than 3 bikers doing a CBT. The unit with meeting room is ideal.

Starting at 8.45am is an early start, for some, but to catch day light during this time of the year is essential. As I have done 2 CBT’s before and finished at 3/4pm, I figured this one would be the same. But the structure of the day was different; I liaised with Ian, one of the instructors for a while to go through some safety and checking your bike procedures. We then went to the concrete area to show we could do some manoeuvres for 20 minutes. We then had a coffee and were out off on the road. We spent a couple of hours on road to improve technics and learn a few extra things to improve my safety on road then we headed back to the speedway to get paperwork done.

The receptionist and instructors are just amazing people. They are so helpful, down to earth n willing to answer any question however silly you may think it is. From booking your CBT to the finishing the paperwork they are supportive and reassuring and I know if I rang them now with a question or query they would be happy to help. Plus you get free tea and coffee all day.

The shop on Blackbird Rd is launching new women’s ranges of clothing which is lovely. I got some cool blue gloves and a neck thing :)

I passed both my Mod 1 & 2 first time yesterday morning after 3 days training.

All the staff at Shires have been very friendly and helpful, i must give particular thanks to Dan who i did my training with. Throughout the 3 days he showed patience, humour and most importantly a huge amount of experience that he passed on to me clearly and as many times as i needed to hear it.

If you’re looking for any type of motorcycle training don’t consider anyone else, you will only be disappointed.

    Thanks again.

At the grand old age of 45, I was successfully guided through the training by ‘Dan’, a very patient and professional instructor. If you’re thinking of returning to Motorcycling without killing yourself, then do yourself a favour, and book yourself on the Enhanced Rider Scheme.

You don’t even need a bike, or helmet or gloves for that matter.

Most of that can be picked up later on EBAY, from born-again-bikers who have decided it was a bad idea.

I had a great day with Steph, remembering the old skills (well some of them anyway), and picking up some new ones.

I will be back for another go when I have my own wheels, and have had time to practice what I learnt, in what was a very intensive course.

You would be insane to buy a bike without seeing these guys first.

A refresher every couple of years wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

    Absolutely brilliant :-)

Well, I’ve finally done it after all the talk and drooling at bike shops.
The first step on getting back to biking after over 35 years out of the saddle was a day out with Ian looking after me on one of Shires Honda CBF 500s.
I think it is definitely the right way round; doing a training session on a school bike rather than jumping in at the deep end and buying a bike first.
Things have certainly changed as far as bikes and riding styles, and it took some getting used to, but Ian has guided me in the right direction and given me the confidence to take the next step and buy a bike and all the gear.
I hope that after a few months riding, I can do the Enhanced Rider Scheme again and improve on my ‘B’ grade.
So if you are like me and have been thinking of going back to two wheels; go for it.
    Thanks to everyone at Shires.

Did my CBT today with Jim (car-park) and Dan (on-the-road).. absolutely loved it, both great instructors, very patient and always willing to give me advice on how to do better. Whenever I made a mistake on the road, Dan would never really tell me what it was, just hint, and let me figure it out for myself.. which surprisingly really helped me from making the mistake again. I’ll definately be back again when I’m ready for my full licence.

    Summary = AWESOME

Having passed my bike test in 1836 lol, I have never had any formal training.
Well, lets just say I picked up lots of tips on the day and had a great time.
There was no pressure/stress just great fun (and a few cups of tea/coffee).
I ended up with a grade B which i’m pleased with, but intend to return in a few months to get more pointers from the guys.

If you are a ‘born again’ biker wanting to brush up your skills then this course is a ‘no brainer’ and an absolute bargain!

I would just like to say thanks to everyone at Shires for all the help and advice you have given me. You showed a genuine passion in improving my riding, and got across the importance of safe riding, but with lots of humour in as well, which made it easier to learn and remember. Good feedback on riding throughout and lots of helpful tips such as when buying a bike, maintenance, security etc.

I have been riding for a year or so before deciding to take the plunge and get my full licence. I learnt so much more than I expected and am a much more safer rider now, through your hard work.

I cant speak highly enough of you guys, thanks for all your help in getting me through Mod 1 and Mod 2, particularly Steph who helped with a lot of positive encouragement and focusing on my weaker points on the day. I look forward to seeing you for the advanced training.

I found the CT training to be very good in Dan and Rob’s class. Certainly it was helpful, encouraging, very informative and supportive. I had never ridden a motorbike in my life, and was rather nervous, but I found myself to be in reassuring and helpful company. There were opportunities to ask questions at all stages, and safety was a main theme which was most reassuring. It helped me to gain confidence, and to feel comfortable on the road. With some shouting from Dan, I even managed to briefly hit 25 mph at one point. I would certainly recommend to anyone else. Nothing was too much trouble and no question or mistake in driving too foolish (I made a lot).
But next time please could you arrange for it not to rain because I got soaked.

Ive just completed my Mod 1 test after being taught by Dan again and I’m now going onto my Mod 2 and feeling comfortable that shires are going to anything in their power to get me through my test and ultimately they seem to genuinely care about you’re safety after you’ve passed, which i cant say about the other company.

Just finished my CBT on a 125cc, had to do two lessons because I was nervous during the first lesson.

It’s not at all like riding a bike and it is difficult to change your mindset if you are used to driving.

But the instructors are great, special thanks to Dan and the guy who used to work for Parker’s.

Will definitely recommend anyone who wants to take their CBT to go here.

Although the training is dealt within a group it feels like the instructors give you 1-1 training.

Anyone who else who goes. Make sure you pay attention to all the advice given. If you do this you will be a great biker.

    Cheers

If you’ve just passed your test or been riding for years, get yourself down to these guys for some further training, you will not be disappointed.

If you are like me and felt nervous getting on a bike as an older person (I guess I’m bordering old fart material) then I can assure you the instructors at Shires are the most patient, friendly and above all top blokes who will take you through from start to finish (CBT in my case), banter included. Their patience alone would put a saint to shame, and I highly recommend Shires to any of you feeling nervous about getting on a bike with gears. My instructor who took me out on the road managed to identify and solve my clutch stalling issue within minutes (which was driving me mad), and his many years of training experience certainly came to the fore. He also kept me laughing all day!

Enhanced rider scheme with Ian. Started off just like it was back to doing my test but Ian soon put me at ease and it turned out to be too short an afternoon. Just as he said like a couple of mates out for a ride. Just want to say a big thanks for what was a brilliant afternoon. Good communication, sound advise and guidance well worth every penny. I’ve got 10 years of riding and I think it should be the first thing on the agenda of every newly qualified rider.
    Thanks Ian it was BRILL.

Would highly recommend the DVD/book they recommend at CBT – takes you through the theory test in particular.
Big thanks to all of you, Ian, Steph, Alan, Andy, Dan, brilliant job well done!

Passed with these guys about 6 months ago, but only got around to posting now – sorry about that.

There’s nothing I can say that hasn’t been said – great teachers with the patience of saints, flexible, and great at giving the right type of guidance at the right time (i.e. they knew when I needed some explaining and encouragement, and when I needed a kick up the a*** for being a d***).

The training isn’t just about passing the test (although they’ll give you the knowledge and skills to do that if you let them), but about making you a safe rider, and I thank them for that.

I went from very little experience on bikes (CBT years ago, not much time on 2 wheels since) to taking CBT/DAS in quick succession and passing first time with only a couple of minors, and I have no doubt it was because of Shires.

Recommended to me by word of mouth, and recommended by me to others dozens of times over since. You won’t find better teachers.

On Sunday I commenced the Enhanced Rider Scheme. I thoroughly enjoyed it, learned loads and came away really buzzing. Ian was a brilliant tutor and gave me lots of tips and ideas to further my enjoyment of motorcycle riding. I would definately recommend the Shires for any motorcycling need you may have. Whether it be a refresher course or just trying motorcycling – but be warned once you try it you will be bitten by the bug!! Thanks Ian for your help and tips. (Originally posted on 14 April 2009 )

The whole process from CBT to DACS has been a joy from start to finish and great fun helped in no small part by Danny, Steph, Mel and Ian who teaches in such a way that time just flys by !! The Shires was the first company I spoke to when setting out on this journey and may possibly be the best move I made. Thanks Guys (Originally posted on 14 April 2009 )

I recently took the intensive DAS 500cc course with Shires. A very relaxed environment made for easy learning with friendly and welcoming staff. Not got a bad word for any of them as they were all very helpful. I had Dan for 2 days… what a guy!!!! If you’ve met him you’ll know what I mean. Couldn’t have wished for a better instructor, always keeping me fully informed and above all always offering encouraging advice and praise where necessary. Passed 1st time on Monday 23rd March just before the heavens opened. Sun came out by 3pm, so got my 600F out and went for a 2 hour ride. Absolutely superb..I would not hesitate to recommend Shires Motorbike Training if you want to learn in a safe and friendly environment. Well done lads and thanks again. Oh yes, and you’ve not got rid of me yet, as I’ll be back to do my Enhance Rider Scheme as well. (Originally posted on 24 March 2009 )

Took my CBT today (and passed!). After 30 years of not riding a bike and being slightly nervous, Dan made me feel at ease in a very short space of time & Ian helped me on the road and built up my confidence. I now feel I can ride my bike with the same confidence as I did 30 yrs ago, although not so cocky!! Thanks to all the team, including the lady in the office who dealt with my booking – a great, helpful & professional bunch that I would highly recommend!

Just got back on a bike after over 8 years sat on 4 wheels and thought it best to spend the money on a 3 hour course to refresh the skills. Dan my instructor was spot on put me straight on dealing with bends, let me take the lead and then gave guidance over the ear peice. Really felt the benifit of taking 3 hours out of my day. Anyone looking to refresh…? I would strongly recommend the road craft course, you’ll be suprised what you’ve forgot and what you’ll learn. Thanks Dan & Shires.
